Why academic writing is so important for English language learners.

Hey, language learners!

This week's blog will discuss the importance of academic writing. There are various reasons why developing academic writing skills is crucial for English language learners. The most common reasons include (but are not limited to) English language tests, academic settings, or professional purposes—all equally important!

So, let’s begin from the bottom up. Being in a professional work environment can be highly demanding and will often require written output. Therefore, many individuals in a professional setting need to develop well-written emails, reports, summaries, memos, bulletins, proposals, and so on. Without the ability to effectively communicate important messages and information within your company, you can find yourself in a difficult position. The ability to be a competent and confident writer can be a large component of one's job.

Much like the need for written abilities in a professional environment, the same applies in academic settings. It is necessary as a university or college student to communicate effectively and share your ideas in a way that is structured and understood by your reader, which often happens to be your professors. At this level of education, students often find that if they do not enter the world of post-secondary education with a strong foundation in academic writing, they will fall behind and take twice the amount of time as their peers to complete assignments.

While finally, most English language learners understand the importance of writing skills to successfully complete a language test. Most of these tests, such as IELTS, CELPIP, and Duolingo, require test takers to have a foundational understanding of grammar, and well-structured writing. Those who complete these tests without developing their written skills are often unsuccessful in getting the test results they want or need to immigrate, work, or study in English-speaking countries.

This is why, at Compass Learning, we believe in prioritizing the importance of writing skills for English language learners. We strongly believe that by committing the time to develop these skills, students enhance the quality of their daily interactions at school and work. Ultimately, we want our students to build confidence that kills the fear of writing assignments and tasks and to pass those English language tests with flying colours. We know this isn't an overnight fix, but for any tips and tricks or further support, Compass Learning is here to help you!
