Understanding IELTS Band Descriptors for Task 1 Writing

The IELTS Writing module consists of two tasks. Task 1 requires you to interpret and describe visual information, such as graphs, charts, or diagrams. To understand how your Task 1 essay is assessed, it is important to familiarize yourself with the IELTS band descriptors.

This week, I will explore the band descriptors in-depth and highlight the key elements to look for when attempting to complete this section of the exam.

⭐Task Achievement

Task Achievement evaluates how well you complete the task requirements. You must provide a clear overview of the visual information, identify the key features, and present relevant details. Focus on accurately describing the data, highlighting significant trends or patterns, and providing a concise summary.

⭐Coherence and Cohesion

Coherence and Cohesion refer to the logical flow and organization of your essay. Present your ideas clearly and logically, using appropriate paragraphing and linking words to connect your sentences and paragraphs. Ensure that the information is presented in a well-structured and cohesive way for easy understanding.

⭐Lexical Resource

Lexical Resource assesses your vocabulary range and accuracy. Use a variety of vocabulary terms to describe the visual data accurately. Demonstrate your knowledge of synonyms, paraphrasing, and precise vocabulary related to the information. Avoid repetition and demonstrate an understanding of word choice and collocations.

⭐Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Grammatical Range and Accuracy evaluate your command of grammar and sentence structures. Use a range of grammatical structures accurately, including complex sentences, appropriate verb tenses, and subject-verb agreement. Pay attention to sentence construction, punctuation, and grammatical errors to ensure clarity and precision in your writing.

⭐Task Response

This section focuses on how well you address the main features and key points presented in the visual data. Ensure you accurately represent the information, highlight significant trends, and provide an objective analysis. Avoid personal opinions or unrelated details. Present a clear and concise overview of the visual data.

Important to remember:
