Understanding IELTS Band Descriptors for Task 2 Writing

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a widely recognized English language test that assesses oral, written, and spoken language skills. As we reviewed last week, Task 1 requires you to provide a written answer that interprets and describes visual representations such as graphs, charts, or diagrams. This week, we will dive into Task 2 of the IELTS Writing module and explore what is required to write a high-scoring essay.

To understand how your essay is evaluated, it is crucial to understand the IELTS band descriptors. Therefore, this week's goal is to ensure you know how to achieve a high band score (7+).

⭐Task Achievement

Task Achievement evaluates how well you address the essay prompt and fulfill the task requirements. To score well, ensure you present a clear position, support it with relevant arguments and examples, and maintain coherence throughout your essay. Address all parts of the prompt and maintain a focused approach. Therefore, if the prompt asks you to speak about domestic animals, you should avoid talking about pumas that live in the wild. Stay on topic! As you write and edit your essay, ensure you address only what the prompt asks.

⭐Coherence and Cohesion

Coherence and Cohesion refer to the logical flow and organization of your essay. Present your ideas clearly and logically, using appropriate paragraphing and linking words to connect your thoughts. Develop your ideas logically, providing clear transitions between sentences and paragraphs. Remember that cohesive devices are essential for this band descriptor. This could elevate your score from a 5/6 to a 7/8.

⭐Lexical Resource

Lexical Resource assesses your vocabulary range and accuracy. Use a variety of vocabulary appropriately and effectively, demonstrating an understanding of word choice and collocations. Your word choice demonstrates your knowledge. Include synonyms, collocations, cohesive devices, and subject-specific vocabulary to show your writing abilities.

⭐Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Grammatical Range and Accuracy evaluate your command of grammar and sentence structures. Use a range of grammatical structures accurately, including complex sentences, appropriate verb tenses, and subject-verb agreement. Pay attention to sentence construction, punctuation, and grammatical errors to ensure clarity and precision in your writing. Avoid silly mistakes to achieve a high band score.

⭐Task Response

This section highlights your ability to represent a well-developed argument and provide a clear, coherent, and relevant response to the essay prompt. Express your ideas with clarity, providing supporting evidence and examples where necessary. Show your critical thinking abilities!

Look at the band descriptors detailed above and decide what your areas of strength are and which need improvement. If you’re unsure where to improve, work with a tutor or teacher who can look at your writing and highlight areas for improvement. It is also VERY important to practice writing essays under timed conditions. The more you do this, the stronger you will become at knowing how much you can write in the allocated time and how much time you will need to edit your writing.
